Vast, Wild, and Wonderfully Connected

How we helped Northeastern Ontario turn its sprawling wilderness into a digitally cohesive, visitor-friendly destination—powered by Whereabouts.

Northeastern Ontario (nicknamed “The Seven”) is one of Canada’s most expansive and diverse tourism regions—stretching over 170,000 km² of forests, lakes, cities, towns, and Indigenous communities.

Known for its pristine lakes, rugged trails, heritage, and Northern charm, the region offers a uniquely Canadian experience of nature, culture, and adventure. As the official Destination Marketing Organization (DMO), Northeastern Ontario Tourism connects visitors with the best the region has to offer.

So why the new website?

The region’s tourism website was difficult to update, fragmented in content, and limited in helping visitors plan across 50+ communities. It had:

  • Disconnected and outdated web tools
  • No dynamic way to show business listings
  • Hard to plan routes or itineraries across the region
  • High admin load on internal staff

Centralized Listings = Simplified Operations

With Whereabouts, Northeastern Ontario’s team finally had one powerful backend to manage everything—business listings, events, and partner profiles. Tourism stakeholders can now log in to update their own info, freeing staff to focus on strategy and storytelling.

During their Fall Fishing campaign, they simply selected operators tagged Fishing, Accommodations, and Fall Season, and within seconds Whereabouts generated a beautiful, mobile-friendly collection ready to publish.

Custom lists that sync across every page.

Using Whereabouts, Northeastern Ontario quickly built dynamic, interactive lists of tourism businesses for every page on their website—saving hours of work.

And the best part? The lists all automatically sync and update across the site—no more manual updates!

By ensuring the right businesses appear on the right pages, visitors enjoy a smoother, more relevant experience—making it easier for them to discover what they need, stay engaged, and ultimately book with local operators.

Big Region, Bigger Impact

With Tripper, Northeastern Ontario was able to create custom itineraries to showcase their vast region, making it seem more accessible to potential visitors.
